|Edgar Degas. (1834 -1917). Dancers. (1878).
Intended for the beginning for a legal career it turns very early to painting. From the 1860 it paints historical paintings, portraits, scenes of the everyday life but also of the horse-races. It is only since 1867 that the first dancers and the tables of theatre appear. Although it takes part in 8 impressionist exposures and that it joined the group dice 1874 it regards as independent. The man, and the life in the large towns of its time remain in the heart of its work. It more and more will be interested in the ballet, which will become for him the artistic subject dominating. Degas is caught of a true passion for the dance, the opera and the "small rats". It sees in the ballet, an ideal subject of observation of the fast movement and a vast possibility of space composition, offered by all the surface of the scene. With theopera Degas belongs to the decoration, it outlines, it draws, nobody is not astonished by his presence but the essence as of its work is painted in workshop. Its invoice is characterized by the extreme concern of realism, of the exact drawing, the research and the motion study. It tries to fix, with the manner of the incipient photography, which it practises successfully, the movement, through natural and spontaneous installations. The grace, the lightness and the naturalness of its dancers astonish but Degas spent the day whole to observe them and this until problems of sight, at the end of its life, prevent it from moving, it cannot any more painter, Edgar Degas starts to carve.
